What is Truth

We live in a day and age when truth is no more than a preference. “What is truth for you, might not be truth for me”. You’ve probably heard someone say this before. “Truth is only relative” has become the mantra of my generation.

An atheist once said to me, “there is no absolute truth.” I asked him, ‘are you sure? Absolutely sure?”

Pilate stood right in front of Jesus and asked, “What is truth?” How can so many not see the truth when it’s standing right in front of their eyes? So many people have asked me, “what happened to all the water if there was a great flood?” It’s called the blue planet! 72% of the earth is covered with water! How can it be so easy to miss the truth?

Peter seems to anticipate the reluctance of people to believe and he writes:

We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-28)

Peter is basically saying, “Hey folks, I’m not making this stuff up. I heard a voice from heaven say, “This is my Son, Whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” The truth remains to be the truth – it never changes. The problem is often the philosophical verbal gymnastics the world tries to confuse simple, common sense reasoning.

“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ,” (Col. 2:8).

Does the truth exist? Of course it does. We know the truth is that you are reading this. But, are there unchangeable truths – absolute truths? Yes, of course! For example, “nothing cannot create something”. This is an absolute truth. If something was created by nothing, then it had to exist prior to something being created. But, if it existed, then it would not be nothing it would be something that created something else. If it doesn’t exist, then it has no ability to create something, simply because it does not exist. Therefore, “nothing cannot create something” is an absolute truth. Phew! This will make your brain swell, but it is very simple reasoning and logic.

The Universe coming into existence from nothing is not a true statement. As a matter of fact, uni means “Single” and verse means “sentence”, or a single spoken sentence. And God said, “Let there be light.” God spoke the Universe into existence in a “single spoken sentence”.

How badly do you want to know the truth? Not just part of the truth, but the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? For me, knowing the whole truth burned with passion from the inside. It’s the very reason I followed a childhood dream to search for Noah’s ark and find the truth for myself.
